Lincoln Michel’s Tweets

When I was a young-er writer, I was at a small dinner with Martin Amis. A writer’s name came up and Martin said, casually, “well, he’s a sloppy writer.” I said, “What makes a sloppy writer?” He said, “Unintended alliteration, accidental rhyme, repetition of words.”

ok, so, first of all: i loathe the word hopepunk and everything related to it, and my work is clearly NOT that and it's weird that nobody told me they'd bundle Marvelous Mutations & Merry Musicians under that label that said, HOLY SHIT I'M IN A POLYGON ARTICLE???

The opposite of grimdark is hopepunk, and tabletop RPGs are leading the way forward to a more optimistic future for the hobby — and humanity. polygon.com/tabletop-games

Yep and what we'll see is the "use AI to market your self-published novel!" grifts piggybacking on the "take my workshop on using AI to write for you!" grifts.
Quote Tweet
Not to add to the discourse but I’m wondering what AI “writers” are gonna do with all that “writing?” Submit to already oversaturated short fic markets and wait for months? Submit to already swamped agents and wait for months? There is no quick money here, sweatys.

Amen. The heart of writing is the mysterious, the surprising, and the ineffable. The discovery of the unknown. Rules and tropes and formulas and such may can be useful as starting points for a path you then get lost in, but they're not the destination.
Quote Tweet
I hope more writers will, in the current conditions, be open about the beautiful irrationality at the heart of writing. You can box it in by talking about word counts and whatnot, but at the heart is a raging fire and *being lost* and a deep disrespect for cordial efficiency.

To put this another way, given that 60k is about an average income, Netflix doesn't want to pay writers the equivalent of it's own monthly subscription fee.

Because people don't really understand big numbers; If you were Netflix, making 60,000 a year, the WGA is asking you for about 130 dollars. For the whole year. 130 dollars out of your 60k. For Apple and Amazon its ridiculously less, around 3 dollars. twitter.com/slack2thefutur…

How did we get here, Hill Dems ask, after mocking and belittling the people who tried to build off-ramps from serial debt ceiling crises for a full decade.

I think I've decided The World of Ice and Fire is the best ASOIAF book. Just give us the full worldbuilding history book, why not?

Whether chatbot remixing is original or plagiarism is a bit of a philosophical question, but the WGA's stance is about a lot more than that! It's about specific contract language and they certainly know what they're talking about...

Also old white writers really love to claim they're inventing "hip hop for literature" huh? David Shields made the same argument in Reality Hunger (and evinced a similar lack of understanding of hip hop imho)

If I were that kind of author, my fear would be readers cutting you out. If you just want quickly written minor variations on established tropes soon you might be able to just hit a few buttons and get Chatgpt to do it for you. No need to pay 99 cents for an ebook

But yeah I think it's inevitable the main target of AI fiction would be formulaic niche self pub stuff. If you're hustle depends on cranking out a new book every month to please the algorithm then speed is all that matters. Will be interesting to see how that arms race goes

beautiful. so (presumably) inexperienced writers fed their manuscripts to an algorithm so they could get "free" outlines to help them market. first off, no one who knows what they're doing as a writer would take that deal. they targeted amateurs.
Quote Tweet
Sudowrite asked novelists to submit full manuscripts in exchange for free outlines, and then spent four months reverse engineering it for yesterday’s launch. Were the aspiring writers who used it made aware that their unpublished works would be used as data collection?

They're even trying to underpay the scabs lol
Quote Tweet
Producers are actively seeking scabs: I was just offered $20,000 to "ghostwrite" on a movie and I turned it down. I have too much integrity and love attention too much to write under those circumstances. Solidarity forever

The scope creep from "Should works of art feature graphically depict sexual assault or other triggering violence?" to "If a character doesn't tip 20% or smokes a cigarette the author is immoral!" has been... something.

Monetarily, the only thing I see working for cranked out AI output in novels is IP novels (Star Wars say). But you have to have a huge fan base to make it feasible and even then there is a ceiling... and the ceiling isn't that high
