No one should be surprised that this woman has likely been condemned to die of cancer in prison over petty retail theft. Decades of never interrogating whether mass incarceration makes us safer has effectively rendered the system incapable of doing so.

There’s a mock solitary confinement cell here at the Capitol today. I have friends who have existed like this for decades. We shouldn’t torture humans this way.

I wish all policymakers had the passion and wisdom of ⁦⁩: “In what universe do you deserve to be sent to prison for 10 months for stealing $110 worth of groceries?” In no universe. via ⁦

How do people with discretion allow this to happen? Thx for showing the dynamics that allow mass incarceration to happen

1/7 Beyond the sheer lack of humanity, there is something very odd about the sentence. She was sentenced to 10 months to 7 years for a very low-level felony. This is potentially being done to push her case, & medical care, off the county books and onto the state. cc:

Here's an unhappy news story for your Saturday morning: A PA woman pleaded guilty to stealing $109 of stuff from a grocery store - and was sentenced to 10 mths in state prison. Now, she can't get cancer surgery and is afraid she'll die in prison:

These men were exonerated for crimes they didn't commit. Then, they got no training or money to start over, because Pennsylvania has no law to compensate wrongfully convicted people. NBC10 Investigators are working on a special report -- check it out on NBC10 Monday at 11 pm.
