I finally started to get through to my family when I explained they don't need to understand my gender to respect it. They can respect I know my gender better than they do, they can respect my pronouns, and they can treat me with kindness without understanding nonbinary genders.

Precisely. Respect is earned. It is not demanded. No one has a 'right' to be respected. We all have rights to be left unharmed. But respect is no one's birthright.
