I’m really shocked that some of y’all would rather silence the conversation than have a bi-racial Black woman discuss this. She is Black AND white. It’s not an either or...read my op-ed on

Eh...I call bs. She almost always is cast as a racially ambiguous character. Saying she is “Hollywood’s acceptable version of a black girl” is insulting no matter how ‘well intentioned’. I’m tired of this “I’m biracial but I’m always cast as black” narrative.
-
I remember when Zendaya got cast as Aaliyah at 17 and all the backlash. She dropped out and didn't follow up with much. However, a mere 5 years later, she's calling out colorism in the community AND using her platform as a bi-racial woman. She's evolving and I'm here for it.
-
Why was their backlash against her playing Aaliyah again?
-
Right....so how does she take roles from black women again?
-
No like I actually forgot why there was backlash against her
-
Ignorant ppl were saying that she wasn’t “ black enough “
Absolutely ridiculous. -
No the backlash was Aaliyah’s family didn’t approve the movie and when Zendaya found out, she dropped out. People were begging for Zendaya to do the role because she’s looks a lot like Aaliyah and she’s said she’s one of her favorite artists.
-
Zendaya literally made a video addressing the whole situation. She dropped out bc she felt like the production of the movie was messy, she didn’t have the family’s blessings, she felt like the process was moving too fast & ppl were also saying she wasn’t “ black enough “.

Hang on. As I think of the talented women of color in Hollywood, I’m floored that she has the gall to say she’s the only representation of that.
-
That’s what you got out of that?
-
Obviously, seeing as the conversation doesn’t even have anything to do with her or people like her
-
Some people can still comprehend the totality of a conversation but yeah, I feel you.
