I used to think BMI was simply a poor measure of health... But no — BMI and everything it stands for is a *DETRIMENT* to health and a key player in the RAMPANT weight stigma that infects our medical system.

There’s a part of me that gets super defensive (read: kinda angry) when I hear diet talk. A part of me that *feels threatened* by the ideology that caused me so much harm. I’m working on reminding myself that DIETERS are *victims* of DIET CULTURE. Dieters are not the enemy.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you’re just as worthy even if you are the quietest, most reserved person in the room. Your worth does not depend on your ability to command attention.

Successfully shrinking my body never made me love my body. It only made me MORE obsessed with how I looked (perceived flaws and all) and MORE obsessed with the foods I wasn’t allowing myself to eat.

PSA TO WOMEN: We have more pressing matters to attend to than trying to shrink and shapeshift and *STARVE* ourselves to look like J Lo or Shakira. The patriarchy isn’t gonna smash itself.

It is remarkable how *precisely* our bodies REGULATE WEIGHT when we don’t place restrictions on our food intake.

With some listening to 1. My recovery brain, 2. Other feminists, and 3. Non-white folx, I came to realize: 1. Other women’s bodies looking appealing does not take away from my worth. Trying to change the way my body looks is not a meaningful use of my time. AND...

My initial reaction to the : - a bit of insecurity about my own body (“my stomach doesn’t look like Shakira’s... should it?”) -wow these women are wearing almost nothing... - wtf was that tongue thing Shakira did? It was weird and kinda funny... THEN...

Labeling bodies as “normal”, “overweight” and “obese” based on data from the 1800s from a group of white male participants ... And then DIAGNOSING body size as a disease based on this tool... It’s downright horrific.

I wish more people knew that BMI was developed in the 1800s by a Belgian astronomer and only accounted for data from white dudes. And that is was *NEVER EVER* intended to be used on the individual level and much less for medical diagnosis.

Intuitive Eating myth: You should never choose to eat food that does not make you feel physically well. TRUTH: There is often a level of MENTAL HEALING that needs to be achieved by *EATING THE FOOD* with full permission in order to arrive at a neutral place with that food.

Lol I just remembered how I used to say that a reason people wouldn’t lose weight with exercise was because they would end up eating more after a workout and counteracting any calorie deficit. AS IF THAT WAS A BAD THING. Now I’m like yassssss body thank you 🙏🏼

Can we just step back for a moment and acknowledge that the Intuitive Eating journey is super challenging. Sometimes continuing to buy into diet culture seems *easier*. But the thing is you DESERVE. BETTER.
