Today in 1797 French troops landed in Pembrokeshire. It was the last invasion of Britain. They got drunk and were rounded up by the local militia but when London heard the news there was a run on the Bank of England.

The government instantly, and for the first time, suspended the convertability of paper money. The bank would not pay out the value of the note in gold. A precedent that is at the core of paper currencies today.

Family legend has it that he was forced to tell them where to land, and he gave them intentionally crappy advice. Captain Owen. A relative of mine had a plate of his, from days trading to India, up on the wall of his home in Pembrokeshire.
