Very pleased to publish my first peer-reviewed article in The Middle East Journal Two-years in the making, it examines why Qatar & UAE pursued such contrasting foreign policies during the Arab Spring

Marcus Willet, a senior member of the UK national security community, has written a piece on Huawei that I suspect will ruffle a few feathers. A short thread looking at the piece:

For decades, Gulf leaders counted on U.S. protection. Here’s what changed.

Another blast from the past - in 1983, Gulf Air (then the airline for Oman, Qatar, and the UAE as well as Bahrain) became Chelsea’s first shirt sponsor.

Basically every Republican I spoke to in DC last week was convinced that if you renamed the JCPOA—catchier acronym, maybe put "Trump" in there—he'd sign it in a heartbeat

When ships pass through Point Nemo in the Pacific Ocean, the nearest land mass is 1677 (2,700 kms) miles away. This means that at certain times of the day, the nearest humans are on the International Space Station 258 miles (416 km) up

Always going to be the way. Legacy/path dependency is hugely important. Was the same with Tamim in Qatar. Near-impossible to immediately shift tack given the foundational importance of predecessors setting the tone for the entire state.

With the breakup of Britain, "Fanciful beliefs about British importance in the world would crumble". Now THAT is fanciful... Boris Johnson Might Break Up the U.K. That’s a Good Thing.

IRGC is now straight up embarrassing their proxies and militias that spent years convincing us they are not Iranian proxies. In a press conf today, they had the flags of Hiznollah, Kataeb Hizbollah, Houthis among others.

A good read. Nothing much new, but with more detail. An odd, unfitting title tho. [Last time Worth described a Gulf leader as a contemporary Metternich, it was HBJ in Q back in '08...] => Mohammed bin Zayed’s Dark Vision of the Middle East’s Future
