Update on my lost inventory: Blizz were able to find and restore my between-alts mailed items. They were not able to restore the lost auctions - between 2-5k sold/expired items including mounts and very rare mogs. I'm counting my blessings and moving on.

There isn't a good way for them to retrieve lost mail. They just don't have a good database system for it due to the decisions they had to make early in the game's development.

I've had lots returned before, and know it can be done but I'm going to focus on the future instead

How about just make mail 90 days for a start. Or indefinite if an account is inactive.

I don't know the answer. Mail is an awkward way to store things too. If I was rewriting, I'd be tempted to destroy the mailing system, treble everyone's bank sizes and make AH connected to bank store.

It would be nice of an account could be 'frozen' by request for a few days/weeks for vacations or illness. That way all the mail stays where it is as well as keeps the account from getting jacked etc. They can freeze the billing by request to Blizzard

I'm guessing it's like the Silvermoon City thing, you can't fly there and you can't get back lost mail because the back end for it is so damn old it's unworkable now.
