I understand that British people say going on holiday instead of going on vacation, but do they also say vacation just as often or would that just not be a word they'd regularly use? Just curious, now realized I've never heard a British person say vacation . . .

Never. Vacant is used to mean "empty" for a toilet cubicle. thats the nearest we have. I would use "vacation" when writing for an international audience, never for uk.
