My bro in law has an intellectual disability and he lives with his parents. I cannot imagine him getting shot while shopping with his mom & dad at a Costco.https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/06/17/us/costco-shooting-questions/index.html …

This makes me so afraid for my son, I can't even express it. The idea that he could get hurt because he's unable to communicate in a "normal" way makes me want to hide us all away from the world forever.

As a father with a son that is on the spectrum and non verbal, my heartbreaks over this. the sad thing is that this is not the first time that someone with a mental disability has been murdered because they were not understood.

@autselfadvocacy works on this kind of thing, bringing attention to it and trying to work on the political and legal steps to address it. There are plenty of stories I see in email updates or from reading the website that I never ever see on the news.1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -

Autistic. Sometimes nonverbal (like today). I'm not surprised by the news it's pretty normal. Existing While Autistic is scary.

Last week, my son took off across a road and didn’t listen to our requests to stop because he was focused on chasing the toy he’d dropped. I imagine him in a scenario with someone who doesn’t understand that he’s not actively ignoring them (I.e., cops), and my heart stops.
