Struggling with some personal plans. Applying for this PhD would mean I could continue TGQ but I'd probably have to sell my home. That's too big a price to pay just to be Dr Renard.

IMO unless the potential pay increases to completing your doctorate are huge, then it doesn't justify having to sell your home and similar sacrifices.

Oh I hadn't thought about pay. It's not easy for me to work except self employment.

But a doctorate in the subject is pretty expensive in US, extremely time consuming but doesn't have a huge potential to increase my earnings, especially with how i am typically employed. So no go for me

I have children (i believe you do too) and personally if it meant moving in order to make it feasible, i would probably lean against it. Change like that is as hard on children as it is folks like us.

Any opportunity for remote commute in your field? Can really make it easier

One is about to go to Uni, the other in a 3-4 years. I could do the job and then the PhD? My field is compsci too. Specifically mysql lamp c# and web apps.

That could be a good course of action. Give you time to save to cushion the impact of going back to school too.
