I'm old.. Yet.. I still have to remind myself sometimes that "there are few real friends" and "many acquaintances" in life..

That was one of my lessons for 2018. It helped a whole lot, once I started to see the difference between the two. I expect I'll be much better off in 2019, in part due to that learning experience.

My "trap" is that I usually find the friendship/relationship more important to me, than the other person.. So it stings when I find out it was just an "acquaintance" rather than a "friendship"..

Yup. That realization was one of the few things that cause actual hurt, to the point of tears, last year. I finally had to accept that some people I thought were good friends were just there when it was either convenient, or bodies were needed for some party, etc.

For me, it's been more helpful to think of friends and acquaintances as a non-binary range, which moves and flows naturally in small increments as time passes.

within each "category" there are levels of dedication, and they certainly ebb and flow within ranges based on IRL, moods, etc. I'm speaking more of the people that put on the false face, pretend to be nice, but really have no actual interest in you or your friendship.. just gain

A hard lesson learned, especially about people who are supposed to be there for me and mine in 2018. One in particular keeps acting like nothing was wrong or trying to play victim. Shooting that down nice and fast.
