Sure have. By helping someone else, whether a friend, a guild mate, or just random passersby, it helps them to improve. It doesn't just help them, but strengthens that community they belong to. Sounds like the paper you read has a very narrow focus.

Fair enough. This reminds me of a research project I did for school about gaming being useful for learning management skills. Plenty of research showing how it helped so-called soft skills, but I still had detractors saying it wasn't useful.

Heck, our entire guild helped tons of people run through heroic Siege before they took away the mount. We never asked for anything in return, nor do we now. (Speaking as Arymneth’s guild leader, so he’s not wrong.)
