      Mainly the ammo...

In a collapse situation, being able to make primers seems to be extremely important to me. Bullets can be cast, casing reused several times, powder can be made - primers seem tricky. Ammo as currency, like in Metro, may have some bearing.

I think at the point you are making black powder (a non-trivial manufacturing process IMU) time to consider arrows, or flintlock.

I've made black poweder from scratch. It's not hard at all. Three main components ground up. It's corrosive, and won't burn very clean, but it will do what you need.

I cannot even imagine the challenges people will have when they run out of ammo... *goes and buys even more reloading components to hold closely as a safety blanket*

For sure it'll be challenging as heck. Alongside the efforts people will have to make for sustainable power and food, sustainable ammo will have to be figured out. If it takes a group of five people spending eight hours a day casting bullets and making guncotton, so be it.

It will of course be easier to stock up now and avoid the hassle later. But you will run our eventually - and when that happens, you will need a way to make ammo.

Lmao 🤣 enough for a camp, even? I don't doubt it, but having the capacity to make ammo seems as important as capacity to make power. I'd look for chemists and scoop em up. Inside every chemist is all the explosive making knowledge you'll need.

I'm not saying it isn't a good idea to make ammunition, I just recommend the proper equipment to build it. Admittedly, I'm an asshole for saying this, but mixing chemicals over a campfire for primers post-apocalypse is movie fiction.

I think we may have differing idea of implementation - I'm thinking once a permanent settlement is established, water and food are sourced, and a population is accounted for, cottage industries will be viable.

I don't disagree with this point... rebuilding will require a lot of resources... currently primers are made in very few locations, which is not good for decentralized successes in rebuilding industry.

It'd be a challenge, no dobut. I'm geeked out enough with the idea I'd love to be in a situation where I need to do it. A whole world based in DIY cottage industry would just be amazing to see. No regulations, no OSHA, just a fear of death driving productivity.

I expect electrical grid failure, internet black out, cellular blackout, and massive disinformation the second it looks like the US is on the verge of going over the precipice. Interstate closures, curfews, martial law, civil unrest, bank holidays, followed by EMPs, then zombies.

Once things settle down to zombies expect me to work my way towards you. Radio stations and broadcast equipment are going to be worth their weight in gold. Surviving the intial bump will be the hard part. Past that, survival is more skill/preparedness based and less chance.

I see it it as gradually getting worse and worse, until the destructive tempo is so bad you look up and realize most of the people you know didn't survive... the remaining survivors will battle for control over resources like a road warrior version of musical chairs.
