Thread. #YongeStreet #ViolenceAgainstWomen #TW Friends. Religious leaders. We need to talk about Alek Minassian. How many of you, in your churches, if you or your preacher preached about the Yonge Street attack, talked about the misogyny behind his actions? We have to.

There was enough going on in Minassian's life that I'm sure he was lonely. But it wasn't loneliness that propelled him down the sidewalk. It was misogyny. Loneliness is an epidemic in our society. This is true. Loneliness does not lead to this kind of violence.

The idea that a man has a right to have his desire for companionship and/or sex met by a woman is what leads to this kind of violence. Last night, I was told that the way to avoid violence like this was to love my neighbour and help people feel less lonely. No.

The men in the male grievance movement who seek out 4chan and admire Eliot Rodger-who committed a similar act and killed 6 people in Isla Vista, California, in 2014-are not asking me to have coffee and play video games with them. They want me to sleep with them.

And if I refuse, I'm a Stacey and I deserve to die. I refuse to accept that I, as a woman, must fulfil a man's need for companionship in order to prevent mass violence. I will not accept that responsibility. Nor should any woman.

Minassian isn't that lonely. He has a whole group of friends who think exactly the way he does. And, now, they are calling him St. Alek. Read his facebook post. He did not want to die because he was depressed. He wanted to be a martyr to the "incel cause".

Despite the noticeable police presence last night at #TorontoStrongVigil, I left the vigil feeling less safe than when I arrived. I felt like there was a movement of angry men targeting me, and nobody cared. No one wants to do anything about that.

Has violence against women in Canada become so normalised? Of course, anyone who loves one of Canada's missing and murdered indigenous women will tell me the answer is a definite yes.

Being one speaker among many religious leaders is hard. I've done it. There is no way to guarantee everything that needs to be said will be said. As I listened last night, and as I read facebook posts, I know now that, as faith leaders, we need to do better.

It is not pretty, and certainly not comforting, but we need to bear witness and name the truth. 10 people died because Alek Minassian thought women who refuse his demand to fill his emptiness deserve to die. I don't know how to end this, shaking with tears running down my face.

Leaders. Do better. Do better for the women in your community. Do better in your conversations with men. Do better when you are given public opportunity to speak. Women (cis and trans), we owe it to each other. Leaders, you are responsible for the women in your care. Do better.
