Tolstoy's diary is so relatable:
December 15th — I am much dissatisfied with yesterday. Tomorrow I must rise early, spend the morning reading, busy myself with writing, attend the council, dine at home, resume my writing.
December 16th — I did everything except the writing.

And jobs not in journalism can be excellent training! It wasn’t until 7 years after college (spent as a HS English teacher, then a historian) that I got my first full-time journalism gig. If you don’t enter the profession right away, that needn’t be the end of the line.

The industry is in a tough place rn but I remember in 2008 when I went to hs journalism workshop many instructors had just been laid off and industry was in similar state. College journos please don’t let it discourage you
