    News could work better—if it got back on track to serve the public and explain complicated and essential issues. We cover politics as a horse race, profile people as “winners” and “losers”, we don’t explain history or give context. We rarely hear from the real people affected.

    Working in news amidst an ongoing democratic crisis has fundamentally shaken my faith in both news and democracy. I’m not convinced that news works as it should. I’m not convinced that democracy is working as it should either. And I don’t know what to do about it.
