    Both. We are social creatures, but I think that some people are naturally more empathetic than others. However, everyone can grow / be taught to become more empathetic - or have it beaten out them (sometimes literally).

    Bit of both. Except in pathological cases, empathy is an innate capacity of human beings (and most mammals). And it can be either developed or hampered depending on the education and environment.

    Empathy can only happen if both share the same value. So I believe it's nurtured because values are built when we grow up or experience the world.
