Found a full-page profile of Harvey Pekar in the Village Voice, dated September 13, 1983, three years before his first Late Night appearance on October 15, 1986.

That I don't know. I have to think someone there had been aware of the 1983 VV piece. And Steve O'Donnell grew up in Cleveland. Wouldn't surprise me if that's the connection; will ask him when we meet up sometime this year.
I wasn't at the database when I posted that. Turns out I do know: Pekar's Boston Herald article, June 3, 1994: "Steve O'Donnell ... got me on Late Night in October 1986, because he liked my autobiographical comic book series 'American Splendor.'"
