It's an interesting bit in the context of his overall development. During the CBS years, he wouldn't care if the audience wanted to hear it.
I think in the CBS years, he'd just momentarily glare at the audience and move on, but he'd rarely embrace it as he does here. (1)

He got so much more "Regis" over time, embracing story-telling less self-consciously. It was like his medium shifted from standup to desk.
