I definitely remember watching this. Peak Dave years for me right there. I disliked this "old guy" with the overdone schtick, I'm sure I was critical of Mason here. Today what's noticeable is that they are easygoing, Dave doesn't mind etc.
I’ll someday make a compilation of comics who did panel by only reciting their stand-up routine, and Dave saying essentially the same thing he said to Mason. Leno got away with it, though, maybe because he turned it into a give-and-take with Dave.

It never really occurred to me that others may have done this (at least to this extent), Mason stood out because his energy/demographic was so different from Dave's.
