It hasn't been an actual jazz festival for a very long time, unfortunately.

I beg to differ, from my New Orleans vantage point. It is the New Orleans Jazz *and Heritage* Fest. The 2019 fest full roster included some 680 artists, w only 80 were from outside Louisiana. There are deep dives into blues, zydeco, African, Caribbean... a LOT of non-jazz. 1 of 3

There is a 1000+ seat tent blasting all gospel, all day. Pre-pandemic there were FORTY brass bands making a living in NOLA each w individual style. Dozens will play each Jazz Fest. Is our brassy, brash, joyous street parade second line music jazz? DOES IT EVEN MATTER? (2 of 3)

These major artists don't take the stage till the end of the day. Album rock fans who've never seen Mardi Gras Indians or attended a Louis Armstrong (Or Ellington, or Ella, or Miles) tribute - there are many, each yr, have their tastes expanded and sometimes their minds blown.

Even Katy Perry upended her regular show to include the Soul Rebels Brass Band. Most music fans won't cross the country to see the Treme Brass Band but a few will. Many will come for Stevie Nicks and discover amazing things. It's a good cultural model, tix prices are reasonable.

Now, as Paul Harvey would say... the rest of the story...pic.twitter.com/eyNDew4o3b

Fair enough. It was the headliners that were highlighted here. For a “Jazz Fest.”

Few in New Orleans even use that word. It's non issue. "Jazz" here is not ossified. It evolves and envelopes all N.O. music. There's no jazz police here, no one knocks the purity of someone's trip. I read the jazz mags from NY and LA and they don't get it. They also don't dance.
