Paul's original theme always struck me as a product of its time, when 12:30 was probably considered overnight and a driving theme would've maybe been too much. Did anyone ever ask him if he had instructions on what kind of them to write?

By the time Conan came along a dynamic theme seemed more acceptable. And FWIW, my favorite late night theme and my favorite late night house band.

I suppose legally he had to? If they'd stayed at NBC, perhaps we'd have got a slightly bigger orchestra but same theme?
