Complication we couldn't dive into: Jay, who had a "secret deal" when he got Tonight, had another when he took 10pm show. Contract guaranteed new show HAD to stay on 2 yrs (unheard-of in TV). When NBC canceled it they had to satisfy Jay w return to Tonight or he'd have huge suit.
Was the guarantee a return to the TS, or, initially, just the 30 minutes preceding Conan?

The guarantee was the new show had to be broadcast for two years. Once they offered him the TS again, he had no reason to hold their feet to the flames on that.

Dave always relished bagging on Jay's 10p show as a "variety show." I've always wondered if this was payback for Jay giving DL crap about doing Mary Tyler Moore's variety show when both were young and sarcastic.
