A temporary fix would be to share the internet connection on the wired computer, assuming it has wifi to share.

Can the desktop computer you have get wifi? If so you can send that signal to the tablets by sharing the WiFi signal. It is easy to do with a Mac or Win computer.

All is well again, finally. After accessing the router online, I noticed that it was using a different WIFI address than the one I had chosen on the iPad and laptop. Once I selected that, then found the password, the sun came out.
