      This got me to consider making a compilation of just the Opening Remarks. All of them on LN. You can see the gradual loosening up as the weeks roll by. We’ll see.

      Late Night was developed in conjunction with Carson so as not to make it too similar to Tonight. The edict came down from Dave Tebet that there should be no "traditional" monologue. So early on, they really were more like "remarks" than traditional monologue jokes.

      They were told no more than 3 jokes. For most of the first year, Dave would tell only one, maybe two.

      And no sidekick. Yet, for a few weeks in 1984, for some unexplained reason, Paul would sit down at homebase and engage with Dave. Maybe to mock that particular edict. Who knows.

      Oh wow, I don't remember that! I'll tell you, I do remember when Dave would introduce Paul, he'd always have a little remark prepared. That went away when they got to CBS, and I missed it.

      A lot of little things gone at CBS: Will’s position in the Ed prevented Dave from greeting him when coming onstage. And there were a lot of Will asides on LN that would crack Dave up. Not doable in the Ed.

          One of my favorite Paul remarks came on International Night. "You know Dave, if all the nations of all the world could get together like we do here on International Night... wouldn't it be kinda a nutty thing?"
