Late Night was developed in conjunction with Carson so as not to make it too similar to Tonight. The edict came down from Dave Tebet that there should be no "traditional" monologue. So early on, they really were more like "remarks" than traditional monologue jokes.

Look who I'm telling Late Night history to. Ha. But I think it worked out for the best. And of course, they eventually evolved I to a more traditional monologue.
