Not off at all, a good host knows how to be "the person at home" and ask questions that will further illuminate the subject. Larry King was another talk show host who'd just ask open-ended but good questions that allowed the subject to speak from their POV. It's a common tactic.

To be 100% fair, Leonard Maltin’s book on Our Gang came out in 1977 so the info was out there but otherwise fair.

Fair enough. Since you were there, do you recall if any of the show’s researchers were aware of it? There was Janet Jamieson and Mira Velimirovic. And Rick, who I figure would have surely known.
