Someone asked if I'd catalogued all of the mail read over the air. I hadn't, so a new project! Starting with the 1980 morning show, the very 1st readings were on July 11. 8 letters were read with no responses. No snappy answers, prepared bits, nothing. (1)

When they did viewer mail on the morning show, if I remember right, they showed the letters 60 Minutes style. Was it that way from the beginning? Not sure if that continued to the early days of Late Night.

What was the 60 Minutes style? I should put them up but not tonight.

Instead of showing the actual letters, they were typed on cards and “flipped” onto the screen like the letters from viewers at the end of 60 Minutes. I tried finding video samples but all 60 Minutes episodes are only on All Access

Thanks. Yes, that’s what the 1980 show did. The 1st VM on LN also flipped all the letters, show-typed. After that, just the 1st letter was flipped; the others already in place. April 20 was the first show with the originally-written letters.

Thanks. My question was whether viewer mail was like that from the very beginning on the morning show. I was a huge fan of the morning show and wish you’d post more full shows. The clips are awesome and bring back fond memories.

Sorry. Yes, from the very beginning.
