To be clear, Dave didn’t say, “use this jacket logo for LN”; when searching for a logo, photographer and designer Marc Karzen came across both the Dodgers’ and Orioles’, and based his suggestion on those. (1/)

DL was already familiar with Marc’s design, having worn that Dodgers jacket in ‘78 and ‘79. So it was an accidental confluence of Dave’s past wardrobe choices and Marc selecting, on his own, the same design logo for LN. (2/2)

Marc told me tonight that he was looking at the Dodgers & Orioles logos on sheets of photostats in the NBC graphics dept. during an SNL taping while mixing blender drinks. I tried to pin him down on which SNL, but, well, blender drinks. Likely Spring '82.

The first LN bumper with the jacket logo aired on October 11, 1982. Edd Hall at the M102 bus stop at around E. 79th St. ("with David Letterman" was added later in post).pic.twitter.com/P8WIZPnJS1

This is the massive project I’m working on and off and won’t even finish the cataloguing for quite some time — the LN bumpers. Still formulating ideas on how to put it all together into a cohesive whole. But in the process I’m learning a ton.

I got the idea for this after acquiring the 6-25-93 Springsteen rehearsal last March. What followed was the control room displaying, in alphabetical order, the last 270 bumpers (out of around 440). I was floored.

Then someone who had worked in the control room sent me photocopies of the bumper slides that had been stored in a binder. I’m not sure he had the actual slides but just the photocopies. Also sent both his and Graphic Dept’s bumpers lists.

I spent the next week blowing up the photos into individual files for reference, and set up yet another database incorporating the lists, the 6-25-93 footage, and other details. Then began screen-capturing every bumper on each show.

It’s slow-going. I’m now only up to November 1982. So far 1,001 separate screen captures of just the photos. There were also art cards early on. Detailing what segment preceded them, 1st instances, other notes.
