Finished the 1st of 16 radio broadcast tapes from 1965-68. The short tale: Back in June ‘66 I dubbed my mono tapes to a 1/4-track stereo r2r, 4 tapes dubbed to 1 track each. All at 3 3/4 ips. Current r2r plays back at 7 1/2 & 15 ips. (1)

So I’m digitizing Tracks 1 & 3 at double speed (7 1/2) onto a 2-track file via the long-defunct Peak. Here’s what it sounds like while digitizing. (2)pic.twitter.com/TROQtIRUdZ

Once in Peak, I can slow it down by half, this back to its original speed of 3 3/4 ips. Then input into Final Cut Pro, where I can mute 1 track and move the active track to the middle. Then save that file (all .aif at this point). (3)

Celemony’s “Capstan” is the only software I’ve found that purports to fix audio wow. It’s only $4,460.

I spent a lot of time cleaning up tapes for a CD my friend Tad Lathrop and I released in 2006. But wow is a whole other challenge.
