I saw this and still wonder why Dave downplays his importance in comedy.
I'm guessing that because otherwise he fears he'd come across as a pompous, arrogant diva. Keeping it humble helps prevent that perception. Not always successfully, but at least it's not on him.

I sometimes think, while proud of his shows, he generally feels that he could have put his mind and talents to a nobler purpose. This seems to have started with his son’s birth.

Yeah, but he has to realize how important his NBC show was to the people who grew up watching.
