It's amazing how history gets condensed. I clearly remember Leno being one of Letterman's very best guests. His bit about Star Trek from August 1984 was one I saved on VHS for ages.
You know that old joke about Paul McCartney? "He used to be in another band before Wings." Nowadays no one's heard of Wings.
