Today has reinforced this frustration that's been building since the new year: After decades pursuing this, I'm tired of being "rogue"; I lack any recourse due to my continuing freelance status. Not a clue how to proceed towards a semblance of legitimacy.

Long shot, but maybe contact the Paley Center. Maybe they can give you some kind of umbrella. It's not the route they usually take, but since you've worked with and provided footage to so many former staff members and to Zinoman, they'll understand the archival value.

I hear you. Step away from the CPU for a day and smell the roses. You know, I recall that Carson Productions produced Late Night. I wonder if they still own any rights. Maybe write to Jeff Sotzing at Carson.

I suspect they relinquished all rights the night Carson retired.

Maybe. But still Jeff is to the Carson legacy what you are to the Letterman legacy. Maybe he can point you in a direction. Just spitballing. Sorry for the trouble you've had today. That's annoying as hell.

The comparison stops where legitimacy is concerned. He has it; I don't.
