It’s precisely the sort of scholarship that the concept of “fair use” is intended to protect, but… you are right to suspect that this concept is not much help if it ever comes to that.

The only defense I'd have, and it's not a strong one, is that I've monetized nothing. I have the option to but decided to keep the entire enterprise "pure" so that no one could accuse me of profiting over others' properties.

That part's probably more important to confirming good faith to companies deciding whether TO litigate over material they aren’t currently selling. If they’re smart they’ll understand you are keeping a tradition alive for them to exploit.
