Most of the statistics we see about “voice searches” are phone driven. It will more than likely continue that way for some time.

I find this odd. I have never used the voice interface on a mobile device. But I find I miss Alexa when away from home. Maybe I should use voice on mobile?
-
The majority hasn’t tried it either (50 million voice searches vs 5 billion mobile users) but it’s growing - especially in markets where typing is much harder than talking. I’ve probably used “hey Siri” on my watch, more than “Alexa” in the past week for example.

(apologies for butting in, I'm not That Guy On The Internet, I wish I was...) I think everyone underestimates image search (via camera). I think that will dwarf both text and voice search in times to come. (Also: voice sucks. He says as an Ulsterman in Engerland.)
-
Totally. Communication is changing - there’s a whole generation of people who converse by imagery and not text of voice. If it were possible, I wonder how many people would search by emoji...
-
Hmm, interesting. (Caveat/disclaimer/whatever: this crosses personal interest *and*
$day_job) I never thought of emoji searches before, although I've toyed with 'mood' searching. Kinda contextual, but kinda not. Gives me ideas to misuse compute power *again*... -

Absolutely. We need unified experiences that seamlessly transition across all modalities. Humans beings have always been multidimensional and multimodal.

Voice won’t replace smart phone, like smart phone didn’t replace desktop. It’ll simply fill in the gaps when you can’t / don’t need to use your hands e.g. Driving, cooking, ‘managing’ a toddler...

I agree Dave. What’s also very interesting to me is how many people think we’re saying “Voice Only” when we say

With wireless earbuds that you simply tap voice is now a go-to for me. I just wish I could make Alexa default instead of Siri.

The update you just made to the Alexa app is the most important one yet

Agreed - I feel humans really want omnipresent voice assistants - true "companions". While smart speakers and smart tvs (I expect the Cube to be a massive hit in the end of year sales) push adoption, in the long run we still want the mobility the smart phones brings
