For what it’s worth, I think what would make me a successful student is having: 1) a community to learn/discuss with and 2) the course designed so it’s really easy at the beginning and makes me feel accomplished early on in the syllabus

agreed, also believe there remains opportunity to reinvent the operating infrastructure of educational institutions for the web. Administrationless learning could make education a possibility for many who can't afford college.
