Separately, having danced across tech and games, it befuddles me how the word ‘design’ can be so many things. Game design (ludic) can be experience design (delight), and experience design can be UX design (UX), but game design isn’t oftentimes UX design. /1

Dang this really speaks to me. I design experiences for users, but I don’t consider myself a UX designer

it's the battle we fight all the time when communicating what it is exactly we design... I see lots of UX designers with a codified UX background in recent years bringing their practice into XR. And of course XR has a lot of game designers. How doth the twain meet?

I actually feel like “product designers” have taken over the space “UX designers” used to occupy and shut out a lot of people without graphic design backgrounds. I used to work with a nurse, an architect, history majors...that diversity of background is increasingly less common.

And now I’ve left UX, after 15 years, so who knows what I’ll do next with this MFA in game design.

Use your combined powers for good! No seriously, I hear you totally on Product/UX Designers being their own silo, in tech especially. There seemed to be very rigid design/HCI programs which made a certain type of UX designer that tech companies want.

+ I don't think it's intentional exclusion as much as it is an attempt at optimizing for 'the product and users' - and it does end up shutting out folks. If we're going to solve harder and more nuanced problems, designers need to Talk To Each Other, though. & not just to 'Users'

Also a lot of what I did at my last two product design jobs used to be the work of 2-3 separate people across departments so yeah
