Coming from the product / graphic design side, really appreciate game designers’ ability to think through edge cases and lifecycles of an experience – really important things beyond the often quoted playfulness and narrative perspectives.

Super lovely that you’ve identified that! When did you first encounter these learnings and how do you think others like you can learn what you have too?

I was in an interview a long time ago when I was asked about my proudest design accomplishment. I went deep on a procgen level generator I design, and was met with stunned awkward silence. Much later I realized the interviewer was expecting a more utilitarian design story. /2

Which makes me wonder, I see all the parallels in methodologies (rapid, iterative, failing fast, listening to guests/players/users etc.) and yet the tools we use are disparate, the language and communities vastly different. and dare I say it, a class barrier? /3

I wonder if there exists a truly interdisciplinary design gathering, where product designers meet UX designers meet game and experience/ immersive designers. the former have a longer practice and history but there’s much we can learn from each other. And much overlap too. /end

Dang this really speaks to me. I design experiences for users, but I don’t consider myself a UX designer
-
it's the battle we fight all the time when communicating what it is exactly we design... I see lots of UX designers with a codified UX background in recent years bringing their practice into XR. And of course XR has a lot of game designers. How doth the twain meet?

I've been reading The Rules of Play recently and it goes really deep (like multiple chapters deep) into attempted definitions for words like "design", "play", "game", etc. because it's so hard to do from how dependent the terms are on context like this!
-
i think i remember that chapter! it's funny because indeed it was 'attempted' - that book is 17 years old now and i think only some of us have tried adopting appropriate nomenclature. I mean, at least 'narrative design' is a thing now.

How did you get inside my mind?!? The hill I will die on is the pursuit of this interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration. Let’s make it happen.
