We're most of the way through public comment. Again, several speakers are here to plead with aldermen to ban horse-drawn carriages from Downtown streets. In addition, a group of seniors ask aldermen to pass a bill of rights needed to protect them from predatory landlords.
Public comment is over. Also mentioned by speakers: the need for the city to replace homes' lead service lines (which were required by city law until 1986) that can taint drinking water and the need for more funds to help end homelessness.
Ald. Ed Burke (14) is quick out of the gate with two new proposals: one calling on the City Council to back calls for the explosion of Saudi Arabia's ambassador after the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi
The other calls for the city to step up scrutiny of the $500K the city gives to the Gary Airport Authority. Federal agents use that airfield to deport undocumented immigrants, which has angered Burke (up for re-election in a majority Latino ward) and the @ChiLatinoCaucus
