    Quite often people point at the pillory and say ‘That’s the stocks’, though the stocks is the sitting down version because stockings go on your feet; the pillory, which locks the neck and wrists between two hinged boards, was significantly worse.

    Bein­g burned at the stake was usually the last stop for torture victims, this form of torture was invariably fatal. Conceptually, it’s a very simple process — create a pile of dry wood with a stake at the center to tie the victim to, and then light it. The fire does all the work

    The Pear of Anguish, or 'the choke pear' the device was inserted into the mouth of a blasphemer or heretic and expanded until the teeth and jaw broke.

    The tongue tearer was clamped onto the victims tongue and roughly pulled out of the mouth, ripping the tongue. It was used as a means of punishment rather than an interrogation tactic because the victim would not be able to talk afterwards!
