Many key builds with features that survived for a very short period of time are lost by now. Recovering them means that they have a much higher chance of being preserved for future generations to see and tinker around.

If you like the idea of software archival, please consider retweeting. I'm sure that there are many great CD or even floppy collections out there. Maybe you think that this sort of stuff is all archived by now as at one point it was very abundant, but that's not exactly true.

A great example would be Windows Me: Microsoft was supplying people with new builds all the time. Downloading new builds wasn't exactly feasible back then so builds were mailed instead, but even with that in mind, there were *weekly* drops. Bit crazy if you ask me.

Some of these weekly drops were eventually released by various Warez groups which made their recovery a little easier, but still not guaranteed. The 236x line of builds continues to be a rather sought after puzzle piece as these builds hold a lot of answers about Activity Centers

Pretty much all 234x-238x Millennium builds should have Activity Centers inside, with the exception of 2380. That build was the public Beta 1. After a bit of exploring, I can confidently say that Activity Centers were removed on purpose from this build.

Microsoft was clever and hid a good 90% of their internals inside webvw.dll. A rather innocent seeming library at start, because all it does is provide the left pane in explorer plus some task directives. Despite the good hiding place, they were removed altogether for 2380.

If you'd like to confirm this yourself, grab ME build 2348 or 2358 (others are currently lost), add a value called "MilExtraDirs" to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion and run "regsvr32 webvw.dll" The registration routine installs Activity Centers if this value exists

Final bit about 2380: The registration routine for Activity Centers still exists. The files themselves however don't, and even if they did, the routine is now gated by impossible conditions so it will never run.

Sorry to spoil the fun but those old beta's can't be distributed by anyone except Microsoft according to their license and NDA.

Old betas keep very slowly but surely popping up even these days. Do you see Microsoft taking any legal action against what's ultimately just preservation for historical purposes?
