If you're pursuing a new endeavor or going through a struggle and you're surrounded by invalidation, it doesn't mean your experience isn't legitimate. You're just not around the right people. Find the people who cheer you on during life 🙌

Mars is a fascinating planet both from a habitability standpoint, but also from a cuddling standpoint.

I once heard an advisor tell their grad student "You have to decide whether you want to be a good person or a good scientist". Can we please just not, never, nada?! Choosing things in your personal life over your work does not make you a poor scientist!!

I was recently on local Ithaca radio! Listen to my interview if you want to learn about the experiences that shaped me as a person, my passion for astronomy, my fight against climate change, and my taste in music.

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that that digital clocks in hotel rooms tend to be off by at least 10 minutes? Is this a tactic for getting us to check out a few minutes early or something?

Does anyone ever look at their old talk slides and feel horrified at their appearance? Over the years I’ve put progressively less and less on my slides, and I feel like its vastly improved them!

I mentioned to someone today that I was applying to jobs and they asked me if I was a senior. It took quite a bit of energy to not scream at them that I was a senior SEVEN years ago. Instead I explained that I’m getting my PhD, which confused them.

I noticed that when I type “red giants” on my phone that the predictive text suggests “and white dwarfs” next. So proud of my phone for learning that my thesis is planetary habitability around red giants and white dwarfs! Does anyone else have similar experiences?

When trainees are advanced in their careers, they remember the mentors who treated others poorly. My social media influence and I certainly will remember. Abusing trainees now can lead to consequences down the line.

I don’t understand why people tell me they “never would have guessed” I was a scientist just by looking at me, and then act like that’s a compliment. I don’t feel that being ignorant of the diversity of scientists compliments me in any way...

As some of you know, I was recently appointed chair of the democratic committee in my ward in Ithaca, New York, and tonight was my first executive committee meeting! I only have until I graduate/leave this summer to be a part of this, but I’ll do as much as I can until then!

May delete but I had a wack discussion with an academic last night about what boils down to lying to ourselves, collectively, about our travel emissions being “worth it” as if we serve some noble, higher cause in academia. We don’t

Academic colleagues, please take a look at this white paper. It shows a path forward for us to dramatically reduce our carbon footprint as we do our work:

Whoever gets this job is going to have quite a responsibility –– they're going to lead a community-wide effort to get the carbon neutrality by 2030 and to build our economy into one that's more just.

I've heard this too many times -"I'm really struggling with [insert situation], but there are more important things going on so I should stop complaining." THE EXISTENCE OF OTHER CHALLENGES IN THE WORLD DOES NOT INVALIDATE YOUR CURRENT STRUGGLE.
