Get a degree for something more hirable (or in the liberal arts! Critical thinking is worth $$$) and make sure you can survive outside of games with what you've got.

I have really complicated feelings about this because I got an MFA in game design and really loved the program and would do it again in a heartbeat. I also love my sociology background and would recommend all game devs specialize in something that's not games. >>

Ultimately, I think what's important is people find the right path to their portfolios in the right environments for them. I don't think I'd have my portfolio, or my career, without my grad degree. But plenty of people are able to cultivate that on their own.

This reminds me of the time I asked
@HazelMonforton if I should get a PhD to be a games writer. -

This is a slightly different angle to this question, but I live in a country with free education, so the situation's quite different for me In the absence of debt, would studying game writing still be a poor choice? Maybe more generalized writing degrees would be better?

I can't speak to the quality of games education in other countries. In the U.S., the outlook is not so good.

There's games writing degrees? I'm pretty up with it here where there's a lot of games Edu, and the closest I know of is a few crossovers with lit degrees.

I’m certainly biased on this point since I spearhead an undergrad game writing concentration, but if the game writing program you’re in isn’t focused on guiding you to develop a stellar portfolio and make industry contacts for when you graduate, something is very wrong indeed.

Which is why I'm applying for Borrowers Defense Against Repayment lol
