I don't think he respects the earned A+'s. One of his favourite targets was the smartest kid in class. Though for a whole host of reasons that's probably not an issue for the demographic that likes Snape.

Did he respect those A*s? I mean, he certainly didn't respect Hermione at all, and he was specifically noted to be the house head with the most favouritism, and that seemed to be an opinion held by all three other houses

Which probably helps explains why Slytherin house kept winning the House cup, if Snape is constantly dropping everyone but them, which, let's face it, he is ABSOLUTELY petty enough to do.
