...that's not to say, at least as far as I'm concerned, "dopey Marvel movies are as important as religious mythology" - rather that (at least from a secular historical/anthropological POV) they seem to emerge from the same culture place, serving the same psychological purpose...

If the copyright on Superman, James Bond etc had expired when it was originally supposed to, we'd have multiple better versions in comics, novels, movies etc

There is one thing worth noting, though: on the timeline that we currently have, the ancient inspirations weren't owned by anyone in particular, while the modern corporate rights owners will actively hold onto what should be public domain for ages.

Depends how you want to define "ownership." Some ancient faiths are believed to have originated as common oral tradition, but others are KNOWN to have originated as creations of leaders, priestly classes or political states for the purpose of social order and control.
