In the early seasons of MST3K, they used the movie library the station already had, or used what movies they could get and clear. It intentionally captured the now-obsolete experience of watching whatever movies were on (in a limited TV landscape), and laughing if they were bad.

A huge amount of the jokes in any given episode of MST3K were not even negative. They were just funny jokes. Things like humming the Jaws theme as a woman swam in the water. It was about having fun.

Why not? It's reboot was recent enough, and there's plenty of modern imitators that aren't understanding what it made it work.
