I remember 4 years ago the #ChapelHillShooting of Deah, Yusor, and Razan. The shooting occurred inside their own home and by the time UNC or the police released a statement, most UNC students had already learned what happened via Facebook.
It was shortly reported that the shooting occurred over an ongoing parking dispute. Within a week a local news outlet had made a condescending piece on how to properly park to avoid road rage. Absolutely irresponsible reporting. https://www.facebook.com/100002229462704/videos/774342725983369/ …
Never mind that the shooter’s Facebook was filled with anti-religion, including anti-Islam posts.
Muslims are being terrorized in their own home and place of worship. Islamophobia has become normalized in our society, but one’s faith does not negate their humanity.
We must acknowledge our own privilege and actively take steps to dismantle Islamphobia, racism, and other forms of bigotry. When we fail to speak up against hate, we empower individuals to carry out vicious crimes.
