Got all fancy this evening, seeing Daniel Kehlmann and Ian McEwan at the German ambassador's residence. Brought swiftly back to earth by the replacement bus service from Faversham. (Still worth it though.)

Found a gathering of like-minded people in Whitstable's Croatian bar. Not exactly feeling better, but definitely drunker.

A low-rent version of 's books-and-cocktails series, which seems entirely appropriate for the grubbiness of Vernon Subutex, translated by genius of swearing and all-round translation guru

Niche resource of the day is this online dictionary for Baltic German dialect words: Thanks to which my draft no longer says: "[Fifferulchens]?! She's [gebrietscht] me good and proper."

In today's translation, a man is described as "satisfaktionsfähig": capable of giving satisfaction in a duel. Because German has a word for literally everything. Time for coffee I think.

The overlapping of Faversham Literary Festival and the Broadstairs Blues Bash is causing me some intense scheduling dilemmas. I will try really hard not to turn up to any book events drunk and temporarily deaf.
