I've come to the conclusion that New York has literally only 1 advantage over California. Literally only 1. That is... The time zone. Besides that, California wins in every single category.

Depends on your income. If ur outside the city and just in NY state it’s much lower tax rate. California at 13.5% (and rising plus potential wealth tax). New York also much better for M & A deals. California not even comparable. Pre bureaucracy California was better than NY.
From a pure living and happiness (not work), I think California > NY EASILY. Now...I also think many states beat both. The cold in NY just sucks. And people in most of Cal are much nicer.
